Please join us to hear the story of Jeannette
Jeannette was born in 1939 in Amsterdam, Holland. After the birth of her brother in 1942, conditions in Holland became very dangerous for Jews.
Jeannette and her brother were sent away with one of the resistance groups who had contacts that enabled her to hide with a non-Jewish family.
Jeannette and her brother were separated and Jeannette stayed with eight different families.
She eventually settled with the Janssens, her war foster parents, with whom she remained until the end of the war.
It was not until after the war that Jeannette learned that her parents had perished in Auschwitz. In August 1945, she was “reclaimed” by her uncle and grandmother who had survived.
Jeannette and her brother lived with their aunt and uncle and their two children. In 1954, they all immigrated to the U.S. and settled in California.
The Janssens have been honored as Righteous among the Nations, an honor conferred by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.
