Join Us for This Year’s “Zikaron BaSalon” Gathering
This year, we are honored to host and hear the story of Gerald Szames, a Holocaust survivor.
Gerald was born in 1937 in Trochenbrod, Poland, a Jewish town of about 2,500 people.
When he was just two years old, Soviet troops occupied the town. In 1941, when Germany turned against Russia, the Soviets
deported all able-bodied Jewish men, including Gerald’s father and uncle, who never returned.
Gerald vividly recalls the horrors of the Nazi occupation—being forced into the ghetto by soldiers with lunging dogs, witnessing
his elderly neighbor collapse after being shot, and hiding in an oven with his mother and brother during the dangerous nights
when people were killed.
For two and a half years, Gerald and his family survived in underground pits in the forest. Of the ten family members who endured
this unimaginable ordeal, five were children under the age of eight. Eventually, they immigrated to the United States, and today,
their family has grown to over 130 descendants, a testament to survival and resilience.
